WEEK TWO: GOD IS FAITHFUL
Think about the most loyal, consistent person in your life. Maybe it’s a parent or a sibling or a spouse. Maybe it’s a teacher or a grandparent or a church leader or a mentor. Maybe it’s a friend that has been with you through the deepest and most raw moments of your life, and you know that they will be with you no matter what may come next.
It’s hard to find someone who you can fully rely on and fully trust. These kinds of people are so special to us because we know how rare it is to find someone who will never leave us or let us down… and the reason it’s so rare is because humans—all humans—are flawed. None of us can get it right all of the time. Even our most faithful friend will mess up somewhere along the line. No one can fully meet our expectations or fulfill every single one of our needs, and we know that this is the case because we ourselves could never be everything to another person. We recognize our limitations and our human nature, and even with the best intentions, none of us will ever be able to always get it right.
But God is not like us.
Since God does not have the same limitations and flaws that we have, God can be that faithful and consistent One for each and every one of us.
The Hebrew word khesed encompasses multiple concepts all at once: khesed is love and generosity and enduring commitment.
And as wonderful as it sounds, it’s very difficult to get all of these virtues right all of the time.
But God demonstrates khesed through a covenant (permanent) relationship with us.
When we invite God to be Lord over our lives, we become partners with someone who truly is the epitome of faithfulness. We can fully trust and rely on the love and generosity and enduring commitment of God in our lives at all times!
And because of this truth, not only can we walk confidently knowing that we have a faithful, loyal, powerful God on our side, but we can also more easily demonstrate this to those around us. That’s right: when we invite the presence and Spirit of God into our hearts, minds, and souls, we can actually show khesed to others because God has shown khesed to us.
