SUMMARY

What did you dream of becoming when you were a child? Did you have big ideas and lofty goals? Or did you even think about the future? Were you content to just live in the present moment, or were you always thinking about what could be next?

I feel like when I was growing up, the ultimate career goal among my peers was “professional athlete.” It seemed as though every other kid wanted to play for the NFL or another professional sports league. As it turns out, even though the majority of students play a team sport in school, less than 0.02 percent of football players will make it into the NFL. Besides becoming an athlete, the next most popular career ambition when I was young was “astronaut.” Everyone wanted to go out into space! The chances of reaching that goal are even more slim; the USA has less than 50 active astronauts currently (rounding out to less than 0.00000014 percent of our country’s population).

I’m sure we’ve all questioned at some point in our lives what we’re supposed to be doing.

Not just for a job or career, but for life in general. Maybe we’ve asked “what’s the point?” or “what was I made for?” Perhaps you were one of those children who wanted to be a famous singer or an NFL quarterback or an astronaut, and you realize that life isn’t turning out the way you planned it to be. Or maybe you are perfectly content in the life that you have, but there’s a small part of you that wonders if there’s more that you are supposed to be doing. Either way, the truth and the reality is that God designed each one of us for a specific and unique purpose. Even you!

If we were all NFL players and astronauts, our society would not function the way it’s supposed to—and that’s the way it’s meant to be. Each one of us has gifts and talents and personalities and ways of thinking that contribute to God’s overall design… and you were made the way you are for a reason. We serve a God who is extremely creative, and we know from the Bible that each one of us has been “fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14).

What if every single one of us were to fully step into the unique calling and purpose that God has for us? Where is God inviting you into “more” today?

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  1. What were your dreams growing up? What did you want to be then? How does it compare to what you’re doing now?

  2. When you think of the word “purpose,” what comes to mind? Do you believe we all have a purpose in life?

  3. Read Genesis 2:18. Were you aware of the Hebrew word “ezer” that is translated as the word “helper” here? How does it change your thoughts on this verse to know that “ezer” actually means “strength”?

  4. As we celebrated Mother’s Day this week, who are some women in your life who have made a positive impact on you? What do you admire about them? How do they display “ezer” to those around them?

  5. Where is God inviting you into “more” right now? Do you feel God calling you toward something new in your purpose?
